I'm not sure if its because I will be turning 30 this year or if its the constant busy schedule, but I find myself craving more intimate spaces to reconnect with my family and friends. I no longer want to throw big parties where I don't have time to really talk to my guests. I am much more comfortable doing a small gathering with a few close friends where great conversations happen. The idea of these cozy conversation areas really appealed to me as a relaxing place to hang out after a long day. These spaces are one of my favorite multi-functional rooms that can go seamlessly from family time to entertaining. So today I am sharing with you some of my very favorite spaces to help inspire you to try this in your own home.
If you have a very large living room, you could break up the space into functional sections. Try a TV viewing area with the standard sofa and coffee table and a conversation area acting as a sort of lounge for drinks or board games. Perhaps you have a great sun room or nook that would make the perfect spot to add an intimate gathering place. I love seating arrangements with four beautiful chairs that surround a round coffee table. It allows for conversations to flow in the same way as a round dining table would with each person seated so they can easily see everyone else. It may seem a little unconventional but it works just like a sofa and a couple chairs would.
Keeping all the chairs the same creates a cohesive unit that is pleasing to the eye. If you haven't noticed by now, there are no TV's in these lovely spaces. The point of conversation areas is to be social with each other and well, have actual conversations. Now that doesn't mean you can't use this configuration with a TV to make it feel more den like. I mean, who doesn't like to have a Netflix marathon in a cozy seat?!
We suggest making sure that the chairs you use are very comfortable to encourage guests to linger about with drinks and appetizers. We love seeing mix and match fabric like these above. The front of the chairs have a nice neutral fabric but the backs have this fun peek-a-boo check pattern in that same neutral shade. Make your room even cozier with a rug that really defines the space and don't be afraid of using fun patterns!

Or choose a classic white slip-covered chair. Slip-covers make caring for spills easy, you just throw it in the wash! These intimate gathering spaces can suit whatever style you have in your home and are perfect for those who love entertaining or just have a growing family that needs a little less screen time.
